Veneers Q & A

What are veneers?

Veneers are custom-crafted shells of porcelain that Dr. Safaie bonds to the front of your natural, permanent teeth. It’s possible to get just one or two veneers, but Dr. Safaie usually recommends getting between six and eight to restore balance and symmetry to your smile.

If you regularly cover up your mouth when you laugh or smile, veneers are worth considering. They enhance the look of your smile, ensuring your teeth look brighter, whiter, and perfectly straight.

What types of issues can veneers correct?

Porcelain veneers are incredibly versatile. Dr. Safaie regularly uses them to correct:

  • Permanent stains
  • Chipped teeth
  • Cracked teeth
  • Crooked teeth
  • Mismatched shading
  • Oddly shaped teeth

Dr. Safaie also uses veneers to correct gaps and spaces between his patients’ teeth.

What is the process of getting veneers?

Getting dental veneers usually takes two separate appointments. At your first appointment, Dr. Safaie conducts an oral exam, reviews your medical history, and asks you about your goals for treatment. He also takes a series of X-rays to get a closer look at your tooth roots and jawbones.

If your teeth and gums appear healthy, Dr. Safaie prepares your teeth to receive your veneers. To do this, he administers a local anesthetic and carefully shaves a layer of enamel from each tooth, about 1 millimeter thick.

Afterward, Dr. Safaie takes impressions of your teeth using dental putty. He sends your impressions to a laboratory that manufactures your porcelain veneers.

Once Dr. Safaie receives your veneers, you return for your second appointment. During this appointment, Dr. Safaie lines up the porcelain veneers with your permanent teeth.

He bonds them to your teeth using dental cement and trims any excess material. You leave the office with a healthy, white smile.

How do I care for my porcelain veneers?

Porcelain veneers are tough, but they aren’t invincible. To extend their lifespan, it’s important you practice good oral hygiene.

Dr. Safaie recommends brushing your teeth twice each day, flossing once a day, and visiting the dentist every six months for a professional cleaning and exam.

You should also stop using tobacco products and avoid bad habits such as nail biting and chewing on ice cubes. By following these suggestions, your porcelain veneers can last for 10-15 years.
