Porcelain Crowns Q & A

What are porcelain crowns?

A porcelain crown is an oral prosthetic used to restore a damaged or decaying tooth to its original size, strength, and condition. Once placed, a porcelain crown covers all of your tooth enamel that sits above the gum line.

In addition to restoring the aesthetic appearance of your smile, porcelain crowns make chewing and biting easier. They also prevent further damage and in turn, the need for an extraction.

Why would I need a porcelain crown?

There are several reasons you might need a porcelain crown. Dr. Safaie regularly uses porcelain crowns to:

  • Protect weak teeth
  • Restore broken teeth
  • Cover and support fillings
  • Hold dental bridges in place
  • Cover misshapen teeth
  • Cover discolored teeth

Dr. Safaie also uses porcelain crowns to cover dental implants. Porcelain crowns blend in with your remaining teeth and they mimic the color and light-reflecting properties of your natural tooth enamel.

What are the advantages of porcelain crowns?

Porcelain crowns present a range of benefits compared to traditional, amalgam crowns. For one, they get rid of the opaque and unnatural look of old-fashioned metal dentistry, allowing you to achieve the smile you’ve always hoped for.

In addition, porcelain is incredibly resistant to staining. This means you can eat and drink your favorite foods and beverages without having to worry about discoloration. Porcelain crowns provide you with a permanently white smile.

What is the process for getting a porcelain crown?

Getting a porcelain crown usually takes two appointments. At your first appointment, Dr. Safaie conducts an oral exam, reviews your oral health history, and asks you about your goals for treatment.

He also takes a series of X-rays to get a closer look at your tooth roots and jaws. If there’s no infection or decay present, he moves forward with treatment.

After administering a local anesthetic, Dr. Safaie prepares your damaged tooth to receive a crown by carefully filing it down. Next, he takes impressions of your tooth using dental putty. Dr. Safaie then sends your impressions to a laboratory that manufactures your permanent crown.

A week or two later you return to the office. At your second appointment, Dr. Safaie again administers a local anesthetic and bonds your permanent crown to your tooth. The process is quick and pain-free. You leave the office with a healthy, happy smile.
