Dentures Q & A

What are dentures?

Dentures, or false teeth, are a type of oral prosthetic used to replace missing teeth. They’re usually made of materials like nylon, metal, or acrylic and can replace one, several, or all of your teeth.

Dentures make biting, chewing, and speaking easier. They also improve the aesthetic appearance of your smile and facial structure. If you lose your permanent teeth as a result of an accident or illness, Dr. Safaie can design a custom cosmetic denture so you can smile confidently again.

Are there different types of dentures?

Dr. Safaie offers several types of dentures, including:

Partial dentures

If you’re only missing a few teeth and still have healthy permanent teeth available, Dr. Safaie might recommend partial dentures. Partial dentures sit on top of a metal framework. They snap into place between your existing teeth, restoring your smile to its near-original condition.

Complete (full) dentures

If you’ve lost all of the teeth on your upper or lower arch, Dr. Safaie might recommend complete dentures. Complete dentures feature a series of artificial teeth on top of a pink, acrylic base. The base fits snugly on top of your gums, making it easy to chew, speak, and eat. If necessary, you can use adhesives to hold your dentures in place.

Implant-supported dentures

If you’ve tried complete dentures but don’t like the way that they slip and slide around, you may want to consider implant-supported dentures. Implant-supported dentures are the most expensive type of denture, but they’re also the longest lasting.

Getting implant-supported dentures requires surgery. During surgery, Dr. Safaie places a series of small metal posts into the sockets of your missing teeth. Following surgery, your bone grows around the implants, fusing them to your jaw.

What type of dentures are right for me?

To determine the type of dentures that are right for you, make an appointment with Dr. Safaie. Following an oral exam, review of your medical history, and discussion of your goals for treatment, Dr. Safaie can make recommendations that align with your individual needs.

If you’re missing only three or four teeth, Dr. Safaie might recommend partial dentures. If you’re missing all of your teeth and want to chew, eat, and speak more naturally, he might recommend implant-supported dentures.
